Campervan holidays to the UK have increased by 58% in the first half of 2023

Max Schmidt, Head of CamperDays, says: “The UK has long been an appealing travel destination for both domestic and international tourists looking to explore the best of the British countryside. In fact, as evidenced by a 58% increase in campervan holidays to the UK in the first half of 2023, its popularity shows no sign of slowing.

“Campervanning is simply a more luxurious version of the traditional camping trip we all know and love. Many travellers don’t want to leave the comforts of home and be forced to scrimp on basic amenities like the ability to make a cup of tea, access to a working toilet and a hot shower, not to mention a proper bed to sleep in. A motorhome provides the perfect solution to this, acting as your very own fully kitted out hotel or holiday rental on wheels.

“The flexibility and free rein afforded to travellers on their journey, itinerary, and length of travel is undoubtedly another part of the increasing popularity of campervan holidays. By not being tethered to one hotel or apartment, holidaymakers are free to explore the destination at their own pace, with the lack of check-in and check-out times meaning that travellers can either set their own agenda or be more spontaneous with their plans.

“This year, the majority of the UK’s campervan bookings – 55% – have unsurprisingly been in Scotland. Scotland boasts unparalleled beauty – Harris Beach, the magical Fairytale Pools on the Isle of Skye, and, not to mention, the famous Loch Lomond. It’s also currently the only country in the UK where wild camping is legal, meaning there are a lot more options for prospective campers wanting to get their fix of nature while forgoing campsite fees.

“Other popular destinations in the UK include the Cotswolds and the South Downs. Located not even two hours away from the centre of London – where one in four of this year’s campervan bookings were made – these bucolic sections of the country are within reach of city-dwellers looking for a brief respite from the hubbub of the city and the stresses of modern life.

“Campervanning has also become a highly popular alternative to camping at live, multi-day events, such as sports events and music festivals. With festivals and sports events, like Glastonbury or Le Mans 24 Hours, allowing for guests to glamp in their own vehicles, visitors can travel to these events in the assuredness that they’ll get a good night’s sleep and a hot shower at the end of a busy day.”
